The heading is the true motto behind Walmart’s business strategy. They purchase on a scale that smaller ma n’ pa wholesalers can not accommodate. Who cares? I care, we care, you should care. You may complain about a shitty economy, no job, and the plummeting American peso…err dollar. But buy local, support local and those dollars stay in your local economy. They then are returned ten folds. Those retailers employ more, buy more, lower prices, the list goes on. Don’t be shocked, American products cost more. Not only does the material cost more but the labor behind the product is the bulk of the cost. There has always been pride in buying American products. Proper materials, uncompromised craftsmanship. My own mother, a foreigner, has told tales of buying Levi’s and the all coveted Converse Chuck Taylors.

Enough, rambling let us get to the point. There are companies out there that still make high quality American goods. It starts with your food, your home wares, your furniture, and not least; your glass pipe. Glass pipes here at The Highway are not made in China or India. Where does the detriment lie when you buy garbage foreign glass? You get sweat shop glass, a crap product, milky and faded colors, compromised quality. It does not stop there. The same American made pipe will cost double. In order for some American glass blowers to compete they must lower their prices. There is no level playing field. No one wins. In fact, that is the high cost of low prices. One day China will own your sack and balls. It is best we all pay now than later. So we do what we do (support those hippie blowers) because it is right to stand by your fellow American.

One last bit to ponder before I leave you with the burden of voting with your purchasing ability. I recently have been furnishing new living quarters. Keeping with my beliefs of locality, I scoured the city for American furniture. Thinking the cost would be outlandish, I was pleasantly surprised to find it not much more than the Chinese counter part. Shameless plug: Comforts of Home There are facets of the furniture industry and for that fact any American industry, that we do not take into account when purchasing an end product. I stumbled across this interesting article at Dwell, about the sin of buying rip off products. The similarities of the furniture industry to the glass blowing industry are stark. Jason Miller, of furniture manufacturer Roy & Hill, states “You need to get to a place where they can’t knock you off—reach a level of craftsmanship or take a design risk that a knockoff company wouldn’t take. If you can’t create that individuality or specialness, it might be time to go back to the drawing board.”

You have toyed with the archaic: Bic, 2 for $1 lighters, magnify glass; the list goes on. If your not a hemp wick user then a proper lighter should be in your repertoire. So we bring you the perfect lighter. Not only does it do the obvious but these Vector lighters feature a picker, packer, poker, scooper. You name it, it does it. These two Vectors have three tools perfect for scraping, poking, and tamping down your pipe. Meant for your old man’s pipe but refined for the modern smoker. ”Hay man… that butane is no nice for your lungs and taste.” Right you are my friend but Vector butane is five times pure; about the best on the market. For all you dab nuts out there we carry the 447 ml cans of Vector butane. Saving you money versus the 320 ml cans. Lets not stop there Vector’s Nitro torch just hit our shelves too. Vector is our new addition as it should be yours. Strangely this rant gives me the urge to take one home. Shhh…

I have always been skeptical hearing the phrase “All good things come to those who wait.” For once I am a true believer. Six weeks past schedule & much hardship, The Highway, is shaping up to look like a “real” store. The final finishing touches are being added this week. We had our new sign installed just yesterday. It is more swanky than I would have ever imagined. I need to thank all of our loyal customers that continue to stop by to see our progress; I believe it was worth the wait.

In the last entry, I wrote about high caliber veteran blowers we associate with. I want to shed a little light on our resident glass blower, Dom. Not only do we have a great professional relationship but are great friends since our youth. We met in third grade, tore up the mean streets of Norridge with our love of aggressive inline skating, only to open a pipe shoppe where glass captivated us. With no kiln, a National 6b, about 100 square feet of space, and many cracked glass pipes later, Dom had moved into his own. Five years later, I get to see pipes with fluid reversals, symmetrical shapes, and perfect seams. I can already see a defined style of his, that is only going to progress. I cannot thank him enough for always keeping us stocked with not only quality production work but very unique sherlocks and headies (that we can’t help but love). You have to remember every time you buy a Dom piece you are not only buying a possible one of a kind but your supporting the little guys. And for that we salute you!

We love to nerd about glass all day here at The Highway. Glass blowers stop by frequently with new work that we can drool over. A nice benefit of stopping by often is seeing our always changing selection. All of our pipery comes from local, smaller blowers. We prefer buying this way so you will not see five of the same pipe. We get a mix of different talent from blowers just starting out to veterans of high caliber. Unfortunately the same does not hold true for the water pipe sector of our industry. Most glass tube companies are bigger operations with a lot of funding behind them to mass produce these products. It has to be this way to keep the end price down. A lathe, the machine used to produce water pipes, is expensive. Along with a lathe, you then need a kiln big enough to cool them steadily, which is expensive as well. The large initial investment keeps smaller blowers from this discipline. It is a rarity to find a one man operation churning out water pipes in their garage. But we’ll keep our fingers crossed. We look for reputable companies with high quality control standards, not to mention American raw materials and labor. Luckily we have a great working relationship with Zob, HBG, PHX, Mighty Chalice & Illadelph.
